Today I am thankful for my son.
Has your child ever made a mistake? Sure they have, it’s part of being a kid and learning. Tonight my son made one that almost cost me my cool.
Every night at dinner is about the same routine. He’s an energetic boy who likes to dance around in his chair at the wrong time. Sometimes he falls out of his chair, sometimes he just drops his food on the floor, but always it’s something.
It was long day today and I was pretty tired. I decided to give them breakfast for dinner. It’s easy and I like breakfast all the time. My children wanted cereal and I was fine with it so lucky charms it is.
Everything was great until my sweet little boy started his routine of dancing in his chair. Now if you’re anything like me when you’re tired and your kids start acting up you might not have much patience and it might not take long for you to lose your cool either. Ok, so back to the dancing in the chair. This boy of mine while dancing his little butt up and down his chair spills his cereal bowl. FULL OF MILK! ALL OVER THE CARPET! oh no he didn’t!
Instantly I am about to pop! My blood is rising, my tone is changing, my son is about to cry and I just breath…
I didn’t lose my cool. I didn’t yell. I didn’t get mad. I held it together and I decided in that moment that I am better than the feelings that try to take over at times. With Christ in me, I am able. I am given a strength to overcome my personal frustration and stay the example I need to be to my son. Yes, I mess up sometimes, but we need to rejoice when we get it right.
I am thankful that I got it right. Daniel learned what dancing in his chair can do. He’s getting it and I’m getting it. We are all growing, learning and getting better all the time.
That’s definitely worth being thankful for!
