Day 181

Today I am thankful for finished projects.

This week I started a deck rebuild with some friends and today we finished. It’s amazing to see the progression of the old and then the new.

Building a deck isn’t easy, but it’s definitely fun. It’s a lot of work and very meticulous. The old saying “Measure twice, cut once”, is so true! Having to go back and cut something when it doesn’t fit is a hassle. However, it happens and a lot sometimes.

The deck we built I think is a pretty standard sized deck. It was raised quite a bit though, maybe 4 ft off the ground. Learning how each piece is intricately cut and sized to fit with it’s counterparts is just awesome. Learning why each board gets so many screws and where to place them so they don’t raise or warp is important. I never knew of any of this stuff!

If I’ve learned anything so far from deck building it’s that I need to invest into some tools. Fortunately I’m helping a guy who has every tool needed to get the job done. I don’t have any of that stuff. Since I’m homeowner now, I think it just might be time to start the collection!
